The 19th century brought the enchantment of Romanticism, evidenced through the new conception of garden spaces, in the construction of flowerbeds, cobbled paths in stone, fountains in “fajôco” stone, as well as in the location of pleasure houses, melancholic spaces, to the taste of that time.

“Quinta das Cruzes” has a large garden park, of Romantic inspiration, surrounded by large centenary trees, which flank the cobbled paths in rolled pebblestone. The total area of the “Quinta”, with about 1 hectare, includes a gardenscape, caves, fountains built in “fajôco” stone, a viewpoint overlooking the bay of Funchal and other small spaces.

It is also in this space that the mural painting (fresh) is located on the frontispiece of one of the fountains, discovered casually in 1998, and which dates the end of the 18th century.

The Garden, which is an integral and fundamental part of this museum, also features the creation of endemic and indigenous botanical species on Madeira Island and an «Orchidarium».
