Was born on 26 October 1818 in Lisbon, in the parish of Ajuda? From an early age, the painter showed an inclination towards design, becoming a practising artist at the Natural History Museum, where his vocation as a landscape and animal artist was shaped.
When the Academy of Fine Arts opened its doors in 1836, Anunciação, then 19 years old, was one of the first to enrol. Sadly, the neoclassical academism that prevailed at the time frustrated his creativity as a natural painter, and consequently, he associated with his colleagues to protest against the teaching methods imposed. He became known after his acquaintance with Prince Consort Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg in 1848, who purchased a canvas hence forwarding his recognition.

In 1852, he started working at the Academy of Fine Arts as a substitute professor for the painting of landscapes, animals and nature. Five years later, he was appointed a full professor. In 1862, and as a result of his efforts, the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts was founded, which resulted in greater freedom of creation and dissemination, expanding the limits of artistic life.

In 1867, at the age of 49, he travelled to Paris for the first time as one of his paintings had been selected to the Universal Exhibition. As a result of this journey, a new creative period emerged showing an adaptation to modern naturalism. Some years later, he exhibited his work for the first time in Madrid (1871), having been awarded the Silver Medal. By Royal Appointment, he became teacher to Queen Maria and the Director of the Ajuda Gallery. At the end of his life and although ill, he was the Director of the Academy of Fine Arts (1878).

The most enduring of the Portuguese Romantic painters died in 1879. The Quinta das Cruzes Museum has three paintings in its collection by Tomás da Anunciação: Feira de Gado [Cattle Fair], dated 1862; Vista da Baía do Funchal de Santa Catarina [View of Funchal Bay from Santa Catarina], from 1865; and Piquenique [Picnic], also from 1865, in which the family of the 2nd Count of Carvalhal, António Leandro de Câmara Leme Carvalhal Esmeraldo de Atouguia Sá Machado is portrayed (06.10.1831-04.02.1888). These last two paintings confirmed to the presence of the painter on the island, probably by invitation of the Count of Carvalhal himself, the most likely original owner of these three paintings.
