Artur da Silva Mendes Campos (b. Santa Luzia, 6/09/1943; d. 2/5/2020), Madeiran photographer who is incorporated in our collection.
Artur Campos made a life path always linked to photography, starting his professional activity at the age of 10 at the firm “Foto Vieira”, then located at “Rua dos Tanoeiros”, where he started as an assistant. In 1956, he went to “Carlos Fotógrafo” studio to play the role of reporter and laboratory technician, where he remained until 1963, year that he joined the company “Perestrelos Photographos”, at the time located on “Avenida Arriaga”. After 10 years, he incorporates the pictures of “Diário de Notícias” (Funchal), where he worked as a photo reporter for more than 3 decades. The “Museu de Fotografia da Madeira - Atelier Vicente’s” has a collection of images captured by Artur Campos between 1991 and 1996, of churches, chapels and other places of religious devotion in the “Região Autónoma da Madeira”. Some of these images illustrate the book “Igrejas e Capelas da Madeira e Porto Santo”, edited in 1998 by Maria Zita Cardoso and John Baptista, which was reissued in 2001 with a new title, “Igrejas, Capelas, Festas e Arraias, Madeira e Porto Santo”, and complemented with new images from other authors.
