136th Birthday of Alberto Camacho Brandão (b. Angra do Heroísmo, Azores, 10/12/1884; d. Funchal, 6/20/1945) military and photographer in the permanent exhibition of the Madeira Photography Museum - Atelier Vicente's .
He was the son of Lieutenant João Joaquim Brandão (b. S. Pedro, Funchal) and Maria d 'Oliveira Brandão and followed in his father's footsteps in the military career, having settled in 1904 and completed the Artillery course at the Army School in 1909, and was soon promoted to ensign at the end of that year. On December 1, 1911, he was promoted to lieutenant and precisely 4 years later he achieved the rank of captain. He served in World War I (1914-1918), integrated in the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in strict cooperation with the British Army (British Expeditionary Force), having fought in the Battle of La Lys (9 April 1918), in southern Flanders (current Belgium).
He was awarded for his commitment to the republican cause, on October 5, 1919, with the rank of “Torre Espada” officer for the “Valor, Loyalty Merit” in the defense of the Republic during the monarchic revolt of Monsanto (22 and 24 January 1919). He was also awarded the 1st and 3rd Class War Cross medal, among other merit distinctions. Before moving to the reserve, in the 1930s, he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel, then devoted himself to teaching exact sciences in private education.
It is believed that his incursion in photography is related to his marriage to Isilda Perestrelo Brandão, daughter of Madeiran photographer Manuel Olim Perestrelo (1854-1929), founder of the atelier "Perestrellos Photographos". As an amateur photographer, Alberto Brandão captured essentially family experiences and professional life, which occurred not only in Madeira, but also in Portugal’s mainland.
