On this day, 136 years ago, the Italian brig “Torquato” ran aground next to São Lázaro beach (parish of Sé, Funchal). The 325-ton vessel built in 1863 and which was commanded by Captain Giovanni, had been in Funchal harbor for 4 days, loaded with horns, bones and other materials, when it was pushed to the coast, following the storm of 26 November 1884. On this day, the schooner Eulalia also sank.
