António Nobre (n 1867; f. 1900), poet from Porto, author of “Só” (Paris, 1892), a remarkable Portuguese poetry work from the 19th century. António Nobre suffered from tuberculosis and was in Madeira between February 3, 1898 and April 24, 1899, in a vain attempt to find a cure for his disease in its mild climate. He succumbed to pulmonary tuberculosis the following year, at just 32 years old, but despite his short life, he influenced great names in Portuguese modernism, such as Fernando Pessoa and Florbela Espanca. Some of his works were published posthumously, from which we highlight “Despedidas” (Porto, 1902), as they contain several poems written during his stay in Madeira.
