Around 1886, it was transformed into a shipyard to support the construction of the “Pontinha” shelter. Beside the locomotive and the various blocks lined up for the work, there is one of those responsible for the project, René Masset (1855-1909), a civil engineer of Swiss origin who arrived in Madeira in 1884 to direct the construction work he called on. the Fort of São José to the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. Even before his departure, in December 1894, he directed the works on Funchal's passenger wharf.
