The “Museu de Fotografia da Madeira - Atelier Vicente's” marks today the International Civil Aviation Day, an ephemeris established in 1996 by the United Nations General Assembly, as a way of highlighting the importance of the sector in the countries socio-economic development and their populations. The commemoration followed the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation 50th anniversary, celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization on 7 December 1994.
To illustrate this date, the museum shares a set of photographs of the Douglas DC-4 (C54-A Skymaster) of the Portuguese national air carrier (T.A.P.) on the Porto Santo island runway. These images, which document the first air trip on the Lisbon – Porto Santo route, were captured on August 24, 1960, four days before the airport structure official opening on the island.
