Portuguese poet, born in Oporto, on August 16th, 1867, to a wealthy northern family. He tried a diplomatic career, but his vocation was poetry. His main work is «Só», published in 1892, in Paris. As an invalid he was sent to Madeira and sojourned on the island from February 3rd, 1898 to April 24th, 1899 and stayed in several hotels (Royal Hotel, Pensão Avenida) before renting a house in Boliqueime, Santo António parish. While on the island, he wrote some poems, which were included in the second edition of the posthumous work «Despedidas». He died in the city of Oporto, on March 18th, 1900.
