D. Francisco de Moura Corte Real was the grandson of D. Cristóvão de Moura, the all-powerful minister of Filipe II (I of Portugal), who was one of the main supporters of the Duke of Alba entry into Portugal.

Our portrait was the son of D. Manuel de Moura, 2nd Marquês de Castelo Rodrigo, extraordinary ambassador of Spain in Rome, where he met the famous baroque architect Francesco Borromini, to whom he requested the interior decoration of the funerary chapel in the crypt of the “Mosteiro de São Bento da Saúde” in Lisbon. D. Manuel de Moura was also Governor of the Spanish Netherlands.

In 1647, being a gentleman from the court of Philip IV of Spain, he built a house on the outskirts of Madrid, La Florida, which is now disappeared.

Another engraving is known, closer to the portrait of the “Museu Quinta das Cruzes” collection, where D. Francisco now gathers all the titles he was heir to: Marquis of Castelo Rodrigo, Count of Lumiares, Lord of Terceira Island and Faial, Commander of the Order of Christ and Captain General of Belgium, who was between 1664-1668, represented in our portrait by the command stick he holds in his hand and the red stripe crossed over his chest.

He married D. Ana Maria de Moncada y Aragão, daughter of the Duke of Montalto and died in 1675. He had two daughters, D. Leonor de Moura Corte Real, married to the 2nd Marquis Almonacid de los Oteros and D. Joana de Moura Corte Real, 5th Marquesa de Castelo Rodrigo, married to Prince Di San Gregório.

Without the hierarchy of contemporary Iberian portraits, the portrait of D. Francisco de Moura Corte Real, reveals a broad gesture of majestic and determined pose, with special care in the anatomical description and shrewdness, revealed in the face expression and look. It comes close to the great Nordic tradition, especially Flemish and Dutch portraiture, which has developed since the middle of the 16th century.
