Was born in Mangualde, in 1961. He lives and works in Lisbon. He attended the Painting course at the Lisbon College of Fine Arts.
José Loureiro has held several individual and collective exhibitions in private and public institutions, in Portugal and abroad, since 1987, the year in which he participated in several collective exhibitions: 5th Biennial of Plastic Arts, Vila Nova de Cerveira, Portugal; "Kiasm, Creation Plastique", Lisbon / Naples; Verde Muco (“Mucus Green”)", Lisbon College of Fine Arts; Modern Art Exhibition, National Society of Fine Arts, Lisbon; Manobras do Século ("Manoeuvres of the Century"), Lisbon. His first solo exhibitions took place in 1988: José, se quiseres, come as sardinhas todas ("José, if you want, eat all the sardines"), Ether Gallery, Lisbon; and Lumaréu (“Flame”), Diferença Gallery, Lisbon. Among many, we highlight his participation in some collectives: 1st edition of the Energias de Portugal (EDP) Painting Award | Drawing, Lisbon (2000); "Contemporary Art from Portugal", European Central Bank, Frankfurt (2002); O Poder da Arte ("The Power of Art"), Serralves at the Assembly of the Republic (2006); Arriscar o Real (“Risking Reality"), Berardo Collection Museum, Lisbon (2009); O Fio Condutor – Desenhos da Coleção do CAM ("The Connecting Thread – Drawings from the Modern Art Centre’s Collection"), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon (2010); Riso (“Laugh"), Energias de Portugal (EDP) Foundation, Lisbon (2012).
He is represented in public and private, national and foreign collections, of which we highlight some: Berardo Museum, Belém Cultural Centre, Energias de Portugal (EDP), Caixa Geral de Depósitos (Lisbon); European Investment Bank (Luxembourg); Hiscox (London); European Central Bank (Frankfurt); and MUDAS. Madeira Contemporary Art Museum.
He passed through Madeira on several occasions: at Porta 33, in three individual exhibitions and a collective one, in 1994, 2004, 2011 and 2006, respectively, and at the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Funchal (now MUDAS. Madeira Contemporary Art Museum, in Calheta), in the collective Feitorias ("Trading Posts"), in 2008.
