3 | Foyer
This space was designated as the foyer, as it displays wooden hangers on the side walls. An English mahogany cupboard dated from 1820-30 was placed here. In this room we can also see the 20th century naturalist water colours by the German born artist Max Römer (1878-1960) who adopted Madeira as his permanent residence. Also worth mentioning in this small area are three paintings; one of them, the biggest, displaying a touch of English romanticism from mid 19th century, whilst the other two oil paintings in wood, one of them by Américo Marinho (1913-1997) show a Portuguese naturalist tradition, with houses on the landscape, and a smaller one, a work by Túlio Vitorino (1896-1969). On top of the English tea tables from the first half of the 19th century, we can see two sets of Chinese porcelain; one is decorated following the imari technique of Japanese motif made in China to decorate porcelain, the other is a blue and white Chinese design from the mid 19th century.
