In the Ethnographic Museum of Madeira.
Until April 16, 2022.
The “Lapinha do Caseiro” was exhibited for over 70 years, in the “Capela do Menino Jesus”, on “Caminho do Monte”, becoming a place of passage and devotion, especially at Christmas, constituting a memory for consecutive generations of Madeirans, determinant reason for the commitment to its safeguarding by the Regional Government of Madeira.
The acquisition of this Crib by the “Secretaria Regional de Turismo e Cultura” took place in 2015 and aimed to maintain the integrity and preservation of this set of more than three hundred pieces, carved in wood, which was transferred to the “Casa-Museu Frederico de Freitas”, where the process of inventorying the collection, carried out by the technical staff of that museum and the meticulous procedure of conservation and restoration, of the numerous figures in this crib, under the responsibility of Jelka Baras, a duly qualified professional, later allowing their transfer to the Ethnographic Museum of Madeira. This transfer was carried out gradually, an essential condition to ensure and understand the process of adapting the pieces to the conditions of their definitive space.
Once the processes of inventorying, restoring and transferring the collection were completed, a museographic project was prepared, in a partnership between “Casa Museu Frederico de Freitas” and the “Museu Etnográfico da Madeira”, based on an investigation that has been carried out for years, and which had as its basis final objective the insertion of this crib in the museum's permanent exhibition circuit.
In addition to the permanent exhibition of that collection, this temporary exhibition was projected, “Musealização da Lapinha do Caseiro”.
Divided into two spaces, in one of the exhibition spaces, the set of pieces, of a religious character, which are not an integral part of the “Lapinha”, coexisted harmoniously in the chapel where it was exhibited annually, presenting a museological interpretation of that devotion space, in order to contextualize this collection.
In the other space, the public is presented through a photographic exhibition, the museographic project of the permanent exhibition, in its slow stages, for the realization of a reconstitution, as close as possible to the original, which forced the creation, from scratch, of a fixed support set that respected the conservation and safety conditions of this collection.
Based on an investigation carried out with some family members and a consultation in the Madeira Regional Archives database, a set of images is also presented to the public, which are intended to evoke the memory of the original space of “Lapinha do Caseiro”.
