The exhibition consists of a 10 photographs series that address the theme of the gaps - represented by the basalt rocks black void - that life on a small island brings to those who crave knowledge, which can only be achieved through travel and contact with other human societies. This is how some people who were born on the island felt, but for whom island status was never enough. People like António Aragão, born in São Vicente, in 1921, who was a man of rich creativity, restless, controversial, nonconformist, sometimes even eccentric, and who left his indelible personal mark wherever he went. It was difficult not to notice him when he got to work, whether it was in the history and ethnography investigation, or when sculpting, painting or writing. Painter, sculptor, historian, researcher, writer and poet; as an artist, he participated in numerous activities, projects, interventions, exhibitions, all over the world. The island did not reach him, but it returned. And he filled in a lot of gaps.

"Memoria"

The Latin term “memoria” means “one who remembers”. Like everything else, memory is not perfect. A given event witnessed by several people will have as many versions as there are people who witnessed it. Because we tend to forget the details and retain only what each one considered essential from the experience. And each one gives importance to different things. Long-term memory is stored sporadically: it is not possible to store all the information, elements such as color, sound, smell, image, function as associative elements that occur to the spirit as a result of experiences already lived. For these reasons, this project is shown in different formats. The series of 10 photographs was built with usual places from my childhood and youth, since I was born, in 1968, until 1986, when I went to study in Lisbon, taking only into account those associative elements that linger in my memory – such as color of the red stonework, the Portuguese pavement and others – with all the flaws in between.
