Until December 3.
In the Atrium of the “Museu Etnográfico da Madeira”.
With the aim of providing greater rotation of the collections, the “Museu Etnográfico da Madeira” continues the project called “Acesso às Coleções em Reserva”, with a new theme being presented every six months.
This semester, we present the commercial legacy of Francisco António dos Reis, a merchant from Ribeira Brava who, during the 20th century, stood out in several business areas, becoming an illustrious figure in this county.
With his strategic vision and sense of opportunity, this merchant knew how to take advantage of the county’s geographical centrality potential, as an obligatory point of passage for people heading to Funchal, coming from the counties in the North, (São Vicente and Porto Moniz) and Oeste (Calheta and Ponta do Sol), and as a port of embarkation and disembarkation of cabotage vessels.
His innovative and entrepreneurial spirit made him a pioneer, with the creation of the first tile factory in 1936 and later, a soft drink factory, a businesses that served as an anchor for his first major investment, the “Miramar” building, in 1944, a space, modern and of great volume, where a pension, several commercial stores and a gas station operated.
In 1959, it builds its second large commercial space, “Casa Reis”, a large bazaar, with several stores, where it installed a modern payment system popularly known as: flying carts, which became the main attraction of this bazaar.
