Frederico Augusto de Freitas, the son of Cândido Galhardo de Freitas and Adelaide Augusta da Cunha, was born on 15 December 1894. He attended the Liceu do Funchal and studied Law at the University of Coimbra in 1912-17.
In 1918, he started working as an assistant at the Funchal Notary’s Office and became one of the most brilliant lawyer and notary of his generation. In collaboration with Pedro Goes Pitta and Juvenal Henriques de Araújo, he published the Revista de Direito journal of law from 1920 to 1922. He was head of the Funchal Notary’s Office until 1965 when he retired.

He was both very active and committed, having promoted activities and projects that favoured the community and the regional public and cultural life. He is still remembered by his strong character, mode of expression, a particular sense of humour and most of all by his long-lasting friendships. He had a particular interest in photography but is mostly known as an art collector and promoter. The vast majority of his collections were acquired by the Regional Government 1978 and are display at the Frederico de Freitas House-Museum.
