Synopsis:
It is one of Zurlini's fundamental works, produced and performed by Alain Delon, in one of the best performances of his career, that of a substitute teacher, passionate about art and literature, who arrives in Rimini, on the Adriatic coast, in the middle of winter. And it is in this deserted and ghostly, misty and muddy bathing resort, superbly filmed by Dario di Palma's camera, where we see Delon/Daniele Domicini wander around, with a cold and pungent magnetism and such an intensity that it takes our breath away, that the teacher falls in love with a fragile and seductive student, with a name with Stendhalian resonances.
La prima notte di quiete, in the original title that quotes a verse by Goethe, is a kind of melancholy poem, with a dark delicacy, which paints an existential void in search of meaning. And Zurlini makes the seventh art the key to a lost purity. Beautiful as the “je t’aime” that Delon mutters on the pier of the Gare de Rimini. (Frédéric Strauss).
