2022.25AbrilFreedom Day is celebrated in Portugal on April 25th. This is one of 13 mandatory national holidays. The 25th of April Revolution, also known as the Carnation Revolution or the April Revolution, refers to an event in the history of Portugal resulting from the political and social movement that took place on April 25, 1974, which overthrew the dictatorial regime of the New State, in force since 1933. This event began a process that would culminate in the implementation of a democratic regime and the enforecement of the new Constitution on April 25, 1976.

This action was led by a military movement, the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), composed for the most part by captains who had participated in the Colonial War and who had the support of militia officers and a mass adhesion of the population. As a consequence, the army managed to depose the president of Portugal, Marcello Caetano, who went into exile in Brazil, where he died in 1980.

Victorious, the revolutionaries managed to implement the democratic regime and the establishment of the new Portuguese Constitution, on April 25, 1976. The symbol of April 25 is the carnation, because on that day a woman offered carnations to the soldiers as a sign of gratitude. In commemoration, the soldiers placed the flowers received in the barrels of their weapons, which represented victory practically without violence.

After the revolution, the National Salvation Board was created, which nominated António de Spínola as President of the Republic, and Adelino da Palma Carlos as Prime Minister. The following two years were of great social unrest, a period that became known as PREC (Revolutionary Process in Progress).

April 25th is thus known as Freedom Day in Portugal and the day of the Carnation Revolution, being a national holiday that recalls the importance of freedom in the country.
