World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated annually on 23 April. The Day is celebrated on this date to mark the anniversary of the death of several well-known authors such as William Shakespeare, Miguel Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. This day was proclaimed at the 28th General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1995.
The purpose of this day is to encourage reading and promote copyright protection. It also highlights the importance of books as a fundamental element of education and the progress of a society.
Guadalajara (Mexico) was named World Book Capital for the year 2022 by the Director General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee of the World Book Capital.
