The first International Day of Families was celebrated in 1994. The date was chosen by the UN General Assembly, which proclaimed May 15th as International Day of Families.
The celebration of the International Day of Families aims, among other objectives, to highlight: the importance of the family in the structure of the family nucleus and its importance in the basis of early childhood education; to reinforce the message of unity, love, respect and understanding necessary for the good relationship of all the elements that make up the family; to draw the population's attention to the importance of the family as the vital nucleus of society and to its rights and responsibilities; raise awareness and promote knowledge related to social, economic and demographic issues that affect the family.
