The 1st of July is the Day of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and Madeiran Communities. Madeira Day celebrates the autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira granted by Portugal in the Portuguese Constitution of 1976, the date on which the island gained legislative power. This day is a public holiday in the Autonomous Region of Madeira and is marked by various activities, such as concerts, a solemn session at the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, laying of flowers at the monument to the Autonomy, solemn imposition of Madeiran honorary insignia, Te Deum mass at the Funchal Cathedral, among others.
