Christmas birthday of Florence Nightingale (n. Florence, Italy, May 12, 1820-f. London, August 13, 1910), British nurse and writer who is considered the founder of modern nursing. 
Her heroic acts in the Crimean War (1853-1856) earned her the Royal Red Cross in 1883 and in 1907 she became the first woman to receive the Order of Merit. In 1860, she founded her nursing school at St. Thomas Hospital in London, the first in the world, thus paving the way for professional nursing.
