Today we mark the 135th birthday of Augusto João Soares (n. Santa Luzia, Funchal, 04-06-1885; f. Santo António, Funchal, 16-07-1970), amateur photographer who is on display in the permanent exhibition room of the Madeira Photography Museum. Trader by profession and photographer by passion, he essentially recorded portraits of friends and family, landscapes and experiences of the island, captured during the first half of the 20th century. Our collection contains 17 stereoscopic positives and 37 negatives in a glass holder of his authorship, as well as the stereoscopic camera he used to produce them. His professional activity was linked to two firms: "Soares & C.ª", owner of the establishment "Companhia Portuguesa de Bordados" (between 1926 and 1930) and "Soares, Pereira & C.ª Lda.", Which was dedicated to the branch of commissions and consignments, which he co-founded in 1938.
