Some panoramic views of the north coast of Madeira Island and Ilhéu Chão, in the Desertas Islands, as a way to celebrate World Oceans Day, which is celebrated annually on June 8, by decision of the United Nations.
This event aims to draw attention to the importance of seas and oceans, which occupy two thirds of the Earth's surface and which play an important role in the planet's climatic conditions. They are its main thermal regulator, absorbing more than a quarter of the carbon dioxide released by human activities. This celebration also aims to raise people's awareness of the impacts of human actions on the oceans, in order to mobilize them for their conservation. The oceans, in addition to being the habitat of a vast number of plants and animals, also provide food, energy, oxygen and multiple resources to humans.
Every year, a central theme is proposed for the debate of new ideas and projects for the preservation and protection of the oceans, and this year the United Nations proposal is: "Together We Can Protect Our Home – “Juntos conseguimos proteger a nossa casa”".
The scientific community calls for at least 30% of the world's oceans to be declared marine sanctuaries by 2030, in a measure called 30x30. Currently, less than 3% of the oceans are protected, there is so much to be done.
