Set of images (over time) of the old building “Alfândega do Funchal”, where the Madeira Legislative Assembly is now installed.
The “Alfândega do Funchal” was created on March 15, 1477 by the “Infanta” D. Beatriz, at the time tutor of the then “Infante” D. Manuel, with the accountant Luís de Atouguia as the first judge. In 1515, King D. Manuel I ordered the construction of the “Alfândega Nova”, which is completed in 1519. This building, a National Monument since 1943, underwent several changes over the 17th and 18th centuries, with special emphasis on the works in the end of 1630 (construction of a defensive stronghold in front of alfândega), 1644 (construction of a stronghold at alfândega and walls around it), 1750 (repairs of the damage caused by the earthquake of 11/01/1748 and expansion) and for 1817 (expansion of the “alfândega” marine battery).
On April 29, 1982, the Regional Government approved the restoration of the “Alfândga” building, to install the Regional Assembly there, which at the time operated since the beginning of the First Legislature in the building of the former General Board, on “Avenida Zarco”. The works began three years later, according to a project by Architect “Chorão Ramalho” (1914 - 2002) and on December 4, 1987, the inauguration of the new facilities of the Regional Legislative Assembly takes place. Precisely 3 years later the cult of the chapel of “Santo António da Mouraria” (founded in 1714) was opened and the statue entitled "trilogia dos poderes" of the sculptor “Amândio de Sousa” (b. 1934) was unveiled next to the chapel. This afternoon, a new sculpture by the same artist will be inaugurated at “Rotunda Harvey Foster”, alluding to the 600 years of Porto Santo and Madeira.
