António Homem de Gouveia (n. Ponta do Pargo, 12/15/1869; f. Funchal, 07/29/1961), Canon of the Cathedral of Funchal, Professor, journalist, speaker and politician. He attended the Seminary of the Diocese of Funchal, being ordained to elder in 1893, beginning his ecclesiastical career as a healer in Porto Santo. He was also vicar at Boaventura, master of ceremonies at the Cathedral of Funchal, chaplain of the “Santa Casa da Misericórdia”, being made canon of the Cathedral of Funchal on 11/30/1899. He served in various civil functions, having been president of the General Board of the District (Funchal) and congressperson of the Nation (between 1905 and 1907). He was a provider at Santa Casa da Misericórdia, an employee of the Municipal Museum and a professor at the Seminary, the Liceu High School and the Industrial and Commercial School of Funchal. During the exile of ex-emperors Carlos de Austria and Zita de Bragança and Boubon-Parma, the canon “Homem de Gouveia” was his chaplain, confessor and his secretary. In the unexpected death of Carlos I in 1922, he gave the compliment of the unfortunate emperor.
In the literary field, he stood out in the areas of Social, Religious and Political Studies and published: “A Escravidão da Igreja em Portugal”, 1905; “Necessidade do descanso dominical”, 1907; “A situação da Madeira”, 1907 and “O Imperador Carlos”, Lisbon, 1922. He was known for being polyglot, speaking fluently in Spanish, Italian, French, English and German.
He was also a journalist, having collaborated in several newspapers, being one of the founders of a Catholic daily: "O Correio do Funchal".
The “Santa Sé” decorated him with the Medal “Proeclesia et Pontífice”, also known as Cross of Honor.
