Funchal, 1833 - Lisbon, 1898. Between 1852 and 1856, he attended a bookbinding course in Paris, offered by “Amélia de Leuchtenberg”, empress consort of Brazil, where he also have developed his first contact with photography. He then began his photographic activity in Madeira, Funchal, in 1863, with a first studio on “Rua do Conselheiro” which, in 1870, he transferred to “Rua de S. Francisco”. He traveled through Europe and the United States of America, learning about developments in photographic art. He moved to Lisbon in 1878 and opened a studio at the “Hotel Gibraltar”, in “Chiado”. In 1880, a fire destroys a significant part of his colection, but, despite this, a new studio reopens on “Rua Nova do Almada”. In 1894 he was awarded the seal of “Photographo da Casa Real”. He is one of the most important landscape photographers from 19th century of Portuguese photography, having participated in several international exhibitions: Universal Exhibition in Vienna (1873) where he was awarded the Medal of Merit, Philadelphia Exhibition (1876), with photographs of Madeira Island, Porto National Exhibition of Photography (1886), National Exhibition of Manufacturing Industries (1888), Photographic Exhibition at the Portuguese House in Paris (1886), Paris International Exhibition (1892) and Portuguese Island and Colonial Exhibition (1894), at the Palace Crystal. He collaborated with the illustrated journal Occidente (1878-1915). (A.P).
