150th birthday of Leandro de Meneses Camacho (b. Porto da Cruz, September 1, 1870; d. Lisbon, May 1961), surgeon graduated from the Medical School of Funchal in 1896. He also studied law at the “Universidade de Coimbra”, but did not complete the course due to having accepted a position as an on-board clinician in shipping companies that made stopovers in the American and African continents.

During the government of João Franco (1906-1908), he was offered the title of “Visconde das Queimadas” (name of the property he held in Machico) for his services to the monarchical cause, however, with the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910, this honor has not been made official.

He got famous for providing first aid to the President of the Ministry of the 1st Portuguese Republic, João Chagas (1863-1925), who, following the coup d'état of May 14, 1915, was shot by Senator Dr. João José de Freitas (1873-1915), which caused him several injuries and blindness in one eye.
