The Day of the Implantation of the Republic is marked with a portrait of a group of Republicans including Manuel de Arriaga, during his second visit to Madeira.
Manuel José de Arriaga Brum da Silveira e Peyrelongue (1840-1917), politician, lawyer, teacher and Azorean writer, who was the first elected president of the Portuguese Republic (1911), was in Madeira on 3 occasions. The first time took place on 08/09/1883, following his election as deputy to the Constituent Assembly for Madeira in 1882. He returned in 1884, at the invitation of Dr. Consiglieri Pedroso (1851-1910), journalist, politician, ethnographer, essayist , writer and professor at the “Curso Superior de Letras”, co-founder of the Portuguese Democratic Republican Center. Finally, he returned to Madeira the following year to defend several Madeiran protesters accused of electoral crimes at the “Vila da Ponta do Sol” Court, following the events of June 29, 1884. On that day, during the elections for deputies of the “Cortes”, due to the suspicion of electoral fraud in favor of monarchical groups, there were several disagreements in the electoral assembly of the “Ribeira Brava” parish, which resulted in the death of seven people. Manuel de Arriaga was one of the defense lawyers for the protesters, and the trial resulted in 22 acquittals and 6 convictions.
In the image that illustrates this text, there are several supporters of the republican cause in full contact, ordered from left to right:seated: Francisco Gomes, administrator of the “Diário de Notícias do Funchal”; Francisco da Costa (1832-1906), industrialist and trader (wholesale business, soap making, wine export and insurance); Dr. Consiglieri Pedroso; Dr. Manuel Arriaga; Pedro Luís Rodrigues, shipping agent.standing: Francisco Rodrigues (owner of Confeitaria Felisberta); Silvestre Quintino de Freitas, merchant; Guilherme de Albuquerque Carvalhal França (f.1898), shipowner and consul of Uruguay; M.
