Swiss Civil Engineer René Masset (1855-1909). Born in Serrière, near Neuchâtel, he studied in Genoa and later joined the Zurich Polytechnic School, where he graduated in civil engineering (1877-1878). He worked on the construction of the Gotardo tunnel (Switzerland) and on the Valenciennes tram line (northern France) between 1882 and 1884. In that last year, he came to Madeira to direct the construction work on the Funchal Pier and the jetty of “Pontinha”, work that led him to remain on the island until 1895 and for which he was awarded the cross of the Order of Christ.
