Princess of Bavaria, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia (b. Munich, 12/24/1837; d. Geneva, 9/9/1898), She was the wife of the Emperor of Austria Francisco José I (1830-1916) and was the daughter of the Duke of Baviera, Maximiliano José (1808-1888) and Princess Luísa Guilhermina of Baviera (1808-1892).

Elisabeth, affectionately nicknamed Sissi, visited Madeira on two occasions, on her first trip, which took place between 29 November 1860 and 28 April 1861, she was photographed in the outer spaces of “Quinta Vigia”, where she was hosted, by Vicente Gomes da Silva (1827-1906), founder of Photographia Vicente, who receives for this action at the mercy of «Photographe de Sa Majesté L'Impératrice d'Autriche».

Sissi celebrated her 23rd Christmas birthday on Madeira, and fireworks were given in her honor at the registration square in the harbour. In her second visit to Madeira, which took place between December 23, 1893 and February 4, 1894, she again celebrated her birthday, having completed 56 years of life on that date.
