91 years ago, Prince Edward of Wales (1894-1972), member of the English Royal family, briefly visited Madeira, on a trip to South Africa. Arrived around 11 a.m. on january 7th of 1930, having passed by the British Consulate, on “Avenida Arriaga”, by “Quinta da Palmeira” and by Reid's Palace Hotel, where he had lunch. He returned to his journey at 3:30 pm.

He was presented by Mary Arabela Ella Gordon and by Dermot Francis Bolger (respectively eldest daughter and grandson of Russell Manners Gordon, Count of “Torre Bela”) with a basket that symbolized an ancient caravel, decorated with flowers, fruits, postcards and elements that alluded to the British monarchy.
Prince Edward would ascend to the United Kingdom throne six years later, which he abdicated in his first year of reign, in order to marry the American Wallis Simpson.
