Harry Carvelery Hinton (b. Funchal, 08/01/1857; d. Funchal, 16/04/1948) An industrialist of British origin who owned the “Fábrica do Torreão”, where saccharine culture derivatives were produced.

Harry Hinton, was the son of William Hinton (1817-1904), British who settled in Madeira Island in 1838, where he prospered in the area of commerce and industry, more specifically in furniture and utilitarian products in wicker, in the production of bananas and in the sugar factory activity. In 1856, William Hinton founded the “Engenho do Torreão” (do Hinton), parish of Santa Luzia, where his father-in-law Robert Wallas previously owned a mill, and a then very modern steam factory was installed. It held a monopoly on the cultivation of sugar cane, due to privileges granted in successive laws and decrees of the Portuguese government between 1895 and 1919, which gave rise to the so-called “Questão Hinton”, spreading much ink in the local and national press.

Harry (Henry) Hinton continued his father's companies and kept the paradigm of business diversification areas, adding to the economic activities described above, the manufacture of tobacco (Empresa Madeirense de Tabaco, founded in 1913), the Madeira wine export, the sale of spirits and the car sale and repair ("Hinton & Sons"). He was a great sport enthusiast in general, with particular interest in football (it is said that he introduced the first football on the island, in 1875) and in hunting, which he practiced in the company of several nobles, such as the prince of Monaco, the Duke of Luchtenberg, Prince Luís de Sabóia and King Carlos I. He is also remembered for his meritorious actions and for his role in preserving and promoting the history and culture of Madeira. He reportedly subsidized a British military aircraft during World War II, which was named “Palmeira”, as an allusion to the fifth Palmeira, property where he died in 1948.

He was awarded the Order of Christ and the Agricultural and Industrial Order of Merit.
