Cultura Madeira - 125th Anniversary of the birth of John dos Passos

John Roderigo dos Passos (b. Chicago, 14/01/1896; d. Baltimore, 28/09/1970), American modernist writer of Portuguese descent. He graduated in Harvard and was one of the most acclaimed American authors of the so-called “Lost generation”, which included big names like Ernest Hemingway (his personal friend, whom he met during World War I, when they drove Red Cross ambulances as volunteers), F. Scott Fitzgerald and TS Eliot.

John dos Passos, who was the grandson of Madeirans from Ponta do Sol, was in Madeira between 17 and 23 July 1960, along with his second wife, Elizabeth Hamlyn Holdridge and their daughter, Lucy Hamlin Dos Passos. On that occasion, the Ponta do Sol City Council paid homage to him on the 20th of that month and year. Currently, there is a Cultural Center named after him in Ponta do Sol, whose main objective is to study his work and promote cultural activities.
