Parish of São Martinho, municipality of Funchal. Its first stone was laid during the government of Luís da Silva Mouzinho de Albuquerque (1792-1846), at the time mayor of the newly created Funchal Prefecture, which he administered between June 1834 and September 1835. The construction of the road and bridge Monumental would initially be a tribute to D. Pedro IV, who would bear his name, but this idea did not take hold. After several years of impasse, it was finally ended during the administration of the civil governor José Silvestre Ribeiro (1807-1891), being inaugurated in 1849. In the foreground, we can see Cardwell's Hotel and in the background the Reid's Palace Hotel (now Belmond).
