Today marks the 54th anniversary of the visit of Leandro Tocantins (b. Belém, 1928[?]; d. Rio de Janeiro, 2004). The Brazilian writer, journalist and historian, who also had a degree in law and whose main work focused on issues surrounding the Amazon, was on the island from February 11 to 15, 1967, accompanied by several personalities, including the remarkable writer Portuguese José Maria Ferreira de Castro (1898-1974) and the Consul of Brazil, Lázaro de Campos. During his passage through Madeiran lands, Leandro Tocantins gave a lecture at the Industrial and Commercial School of Funchal (currently Francisco Franco Secondary School), on February 14, 1967, under the theme «Revelators and Interpreters of the Amazon».
