The “Museu de Fotografia da Madeira - Atelier Vicente's” marks the 143rd anniversary of the birth of Max Römer (1878-1960), German painter, born in Hamburg, who lived in Madeira from 1922 until his death.

In his vast and eclectic artistic work, he frequently represented the landscapes, daily life, uses and customs of Madeira, which is why he is an important reference in any ethnography study, built heritage and culture of this region. His legacy is still very relevant today, and his images are authentic ex-libris of Madeira, with a great touristic and cultural impact.

In addition to painting, where he stood out for his mastery, with particular emphasis on the watercolor technique, he carried out extensive work in the field of graphic arts, such as illustrations for book and magazine covers, promotional postcards from Madeira, posters for cinema sessions, advertisements, among others. He created several public murals of great technical nature, with particular emphasis on the panels, ceilings and medallions made in the 30s of the 20th century, at the São Lourenço Palace. The murals of the former Hotel Belmonte, today Colégio do Infante (1933), the HM Borges wine warehouses (1933), the Madeira Wine Company (1942) and those in the canteen of the current Liceu Jaime Moniz (1945), are also testimony of its pictorial and artistic quality. He restored sacred art in some churches on the island, particularly in São Vicente and Porto Santo.

He was also a drawing and painting professor, initially at his studio and later at the Madeira Academy of Music and Fine Arts, currently the Madeira Conservatory – Professional School of Arts, Eng.º Luiz Peter Clode.

Max Römer's work is disseminated in several private, national and foreign collections, and here in the region, the collections of the Madeiran Edward Kassab and the Quinta das Cruzes Museum stand out.
