The “Museu de Fotografia da Madeira - Atelier Vicente's” marks today the 153rd birthday of Archibald George Clode. He was born in Argentina on November 17, 1868 and, before coming to Madeira, studied in countries such as England and Germany. In 1894 he married Maria Francelina Crawford do Nascimento, with whom he had 3 children, William Edward Clode, Dorothea Clode and Luiz Peter Stanton Canning Clode. On a professional level, he developed several activities, including pioneering teaching of the English language at the Funchal School of Commerce (currently Francisco Franco Secondary School) and the command of the Royal Fire Brigade of Funchal. He was a founding partner of the company Welsh & Cunha and was in charge of the wine section of Leacock & Companhia. He was a fan of sports, particularly cricket, being one of the promoters of the Excelsior Madeira Cricket Club at the end of the 19th century. He was also at the origin of the first football games in Madeira and was also an enthusiast of the “Esquadras de Navegação Terreste”, recreational and paramilitary clubs that operated in Madeira between 1880 and 1916
