The “Museu de Fotografia da Madeira - Atelier Vicente's” marks today the centenary of General Charles Mangin's visit to Madeira (1866-1925), an officer of the French army who played an important role in the First World War. He began his military career at the military school of Saint-Cyr, and commanded troops in different theaters of war in the French colonies. During World War I, he commanded French and American troops in different battles, with particular emphasis on those of Verdum and Marne, where he won. Due to his aggressive tactics, he earned the nickname "The Butcher". He was also known for the creation of “La Force Noire”, which consisted of large-scale incorporation of African soldiers into the French army. After the victory of the Allies, he was given the task of occupying the German territory of the Rhineland, having also been appointed member of the French Supreme Council of War and Inspector of the Colonial Force of France. He was awarded all 5 degrees of the Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur (the highest French decoration), the Commendatore di prima Classe dell'Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro (Italy), Distinguished Service Medal (USA) and Companion of the Order of the Bath (UK), among other value distinctions. He was in Madeira between 26 and 28 November 1921, having arrived aboard the French cruiser “Jules Michelet”, representing his government in the homage ceremonies and transfer of the 33 French sailors mortal remains of the gunboat "Surprise". This vessel sank in the port of Funchal, after being bombed by the German submarine U-38, on December 3, 1916, during the First World War. He was received at the city's wharf by the Madeiran civil and military authorities, where he was ordered to build in his honor a triumphal arch in boxwood. After a brief visit to the São Lourenço Palace, General Mangin went to Funchal Cathedral, where a mass was celebrated in memory of the sailors who fell on the island. This was followed by a dinner at the Palácio de São Lourenço, hosted by the Civil Governor of Funchal, and a lunch on the following day, at the “Esplanade” Restaurant (Terreiro da Luta), in a gesture by the Military Commander of Madeira, who was rewarded with a dinner aboard the French cruiser. On November 28, 1921, the transfer ceremonies of the French sailors bodies took place, and they were greeted during the funeral procession, which began at the “Nossa Senhora das Angústias” cemetery (now Santa Catarina Park) bound for the Port of Funchal, where the cruiser “Jules Michelet” was located, which left with the urns that same day.
