Charles of Austria, full name being, Karl Franz Josef Ludwig Hubert Georg Maria von Habsburg-Lothringen - Charles I, Emperor of Austria; Charles IV, King of Hungary; Charles III, King of Bohemia (b. Persenbeug-Gottsdorf ( Austria, 1887) died in Funchal, in 1922.

In the sequence of the victory of the Allies in the First World War, the emperor was forced into exile in Madeira, where he arrived on November 19th, 1921. He died at the age of 34, victim of a double influenza pneumonia, on April 1st, 1922, at Quinta do Monte, an estate owned by banker Rocha Machado. On April 5th   his remains were transferred to the Nossa Senhora do Monte Parish Church.

In 2004, his beatification was approved by Pope John Paul II grounded on his Catholic faith and on his role as a peacemaker during war.
