António Oliveira Salazar (b. Santa Comba Dão, 1889 - d. Lisbon, 1970) was a Portuguese nationalist statesman who, in addition to being minister of finance, became president of the Council of Ministers of the dictatorial government of the Estado Novo. Salazar was a professor of Political Economy, Financial Science and Social Economy at the University of Coimbra and he visited the island by invitation of the Catholic Center of Funchal. During this short trip (3-18 April, 1925) he gave two lectures in the Hall of the Diocesan Museum, one on «Laicism and Liberty» and the other about «Bolshevism and the Congregation».
