Ruins of the Convent of São Francisco, which belonged to the Order of the Friars Minors, from the Observant branch of Portugal, then parish of São Pedro, and now parish of Sé.

The presence of the Franciscans goes back to the settlement years and the first group settled in a hermitage, located on the right bank of the S. João stream, with invocation to São João Baptista.

Since it was not the most suitable location, they moved into the center of the village near the municipal garden and the Municipal Baltazar Dias Theatre.

The Convent was founded by Luís Álvares da Costa and his son Francisco Álvares da Costa in 1473, being successively improved and expanded in the 15th century. It was rebuilt around 1750 as it was too small and modest. It underwent several modifications until the end of the 18th century, but the works remained unfinished. In 1835 and due to the ecclesiastical Reformation, the Convent was extinguished. Later, it assumed other functions, serving as a hospital, prison, barracks, court and asylum.

In 1844 it was handed to the Funchal City Council with the purpose of building judicial courts, the town hall and the municipalities administrative and treasury services, but it ended by being demolished in the 1870s, giving way to the building of new roads.
