Portrait of Vicente Gomes Silva, Júnior (1857-1933) dressed as a fireman. In addition to being a partner and photographer at Photographia Vicente, founded by his father, he was also a volunteer at the Funchal Volunteer Firefighters’ Company, which was established on September 24th, 1888. He joined on February 16th, 1889 and carried out an honorable journey, having received a vote of praise in 1894, from the “Voluntary Firefighters’ Humanitarian Association”, for his actions in combating the fire that occurred on April 9th of that year, in Phelps Street. Two years later, he was appointed Acting Commander of that institution, which he then came to command definitively from December 4th, 1900, a position he later abandoned, due to the inherent demands of Photographia Vicente's management, which also interfered with his activities as a musician. On May 31st, 1917, he was appointed honorary commander of the Volunteer Firefighters.
