Canon of the Funchal Cathedral and seminary professor, Jaime de Gouveia Barreto (b. Porto Moniz, May 13th, 1887 - d. Funchal, July 12th, 1963), who poses for the photo that illustrates this text, when he was 14 years old. He attended the Funchal Episcopal Seminary, having been appointed chaplain of the Cathedral in 1906 and receiving holy orders from an elder in 1910. During the First World War (1914-1918), he served as chaplain lieutenant in the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps in France, between 1918 and 1919. On his return to the island, he was appointed vice-chancellor of the Funchal Seminary, where he later became chancellor between 1936 and 1956. He became Canon in 1936, and was later awarded the title of Monsignor. Under the pontificate of Pius XII, he was distinguished with the honors of His Holiness's domestic prelate. In 1943 he was appointed archpriest of the Funchal district.

He was also a naturalist, having assisted Father Ernest Schmitz (1845 - 1922) in the organization of specimens at the Seminary Museum (natural history), which this German priest founded and directed. Later, Canon Barreto himself would assume the management of this museum, whose legacy is currently in the Natural History Museum in the Botanical Garden.
