Rota da Cal (lime route) was ranked in 2005 by the Regional Government of Madeira as a Regional Public Interest heritage. The Association of this Route aims to "study, research, promotion, information and dissemination of culture and heritage, and the publication of studies and reports and promotion of tours, both scientific and educational."
Moreover, it is also included "the development of culture, defence and preservation of historic and artistic heritage and conservation of classified monuments and historic sites”
The visit to the museum site Rota da Cal consists of a pedestrian route that takes about 30 minutes, from the quarries of limestone extraction to the Museum. This was the route taken by employees in the lime kiln, many years ago, in the transportation of firewood, water and lime for the lime kiln.
Inside the museum, visitors have access to a video that explains the entire process of production from extraction of lime from limestone to its cooking and its uses.
They can still see fossils of more than 5 million years.
