There were clay deposits in the archipelago of Madeira, a fact that is still visible today in the local toponymy, from which clay was extracted, which was used both as a building material, in popular architecture, and as a raw material in the production of various artifacts. In the 2nd half of the 15th century, clay was used for roofs and in the 16th century the potter trade became more popular, with the production of quality tiles and tableware. The production of clay items was very varied, with several potteries springing up in different municipalities of the Region.
