ABM published on its archive search platform the descriptive records of William Hinton & Sons fund, in a total of 910 installation units, with dates between 1827 and 1994. Instituted by William Hinton (1817-1904), which was established in Madeira in 1838, the William Hinton & Sons firm played an important role in Madeira economy of the 19th and 20th centuries, mainly within the scope of the sugar industry, thanks to the dynamism of Engenho do Torreão and the technological advantage of this steam plant. In this regard, we can highlight the documentary series of industrial machine plants (1896-1969) and creation and industrial property patents (1899-1925). The William Hinton & Sons fund clearly asserts itself as a repository of essential information for the knowledge of Madeira's economic and social history of the last 160 years. After the descriptive information that will allow the consultation of this file to be guided, ABM will start a project that will make it possible to consult some series digitally and in a web environment.
