In the past, both the "house bread" and the bolo do caco (flat, round-shaped home-made bread cooked on flat basalt stone slab) were kneaded and baked in the domestic units, a tradition that still remains in some houses of our rural areas. For its confection, the mixture was kneaded in these one-piece oblong or circular wooden bowls, carved with a hoe. Later, glazed clay bowls were used, currently replaced by plastic bathtubs.
