The Crib (Lapinha) by Daniel Vasconcelos portrays a rock- island, both real and imaginary, placed in an isolated place, surrounded by breakwaters and with no electricity. Going beyond the traditional nativity scene, it gathers and confronts the concept of devotion, spirituality, sacred versus profane by displaying a mixture of symbols and metaphors that penetrate into an almost metaphysical world inviting to interpretations that cross generations, hence illustrating, when taking into account today’s perceptions, essentially sour and raw, the struggle of every day life on an island, adding the experience of an invisible narrator who dies of exasperation while continuously reborning at the break of the day, with renovated hope and believing in a new cycle. It portrays every day scenes similar to the ones of traditional cribs that include figures, small huts and vegetation, contrasting with the figure of an adult Christ who observes the island from the outside world, as a foreigner.
