In addition to building the crib, paying a visit to family or friend’s crib has become a ritual and Christmas only gains full meaning when some of the most emblematic cribs are ready to welcome visitors. It is the case of “Lapinha do Caseiro”, the most iconic crib in Madeira.
Francisco Ferreira, known as the “Caseiro”, was an autodidactic who eventually became an artisan. This precious collection, with more than 300 pieces, was recovered and acquired by the Regional Government being thus included in the collection of the Ethnographic Museum, being, ever since, on display, contributing therefore to recover one of the most remarkable Christmas traditions.
